I had some extra pecans, so I went searching for a recipe that would be an easy dessert and something I have never tried before. Part of me wanted to make a nice pecan pie, but I probably make that a little too often. Like I said, I wanted to be a bit more adventurous this time. And I’m glad I did!

This recipe that I found is for maple pecan shortbread squares and they really are wonderful. The bottom of the dessert is a simple, and very light shortbread which combined with the topping is really great. The topping is a nice mixture of maple syrup, egg, brown sugar and pecans that you pour over the partially baked shortbread. You bake the shortbread for about another 15 minutes and you get these great smelling, delicious squares that everyone will love!

Here’s what you need:

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup softened butter
1 egg
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1/2 cup chopped pecans
