I’m always looking for a great burger and this one is a great hamburger plus more.  Instead of a straight burger this sandwich is actually a wonderful patty melt that has a sour cream and caramelized onion mix, along with sour cream and onion chips, and a pickle relish on it.  There’s also cheese and you melt it all on the grill.

Add some fries or a salad and you’ve got yourself a great meal.  I always use sour cream with this recipe, but you can try creme fraiche.  If you don’t know creme fraiche is pretty much the same as sour cream, but is not as sour.  Give it a try and let me know what your family thinks of these patty melts.  I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Here’s what you need:

1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 bay leaf
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 cup beef or veal stock
1 cup crème fraîche or sour cream
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Coarse black pepper
Sliced potato or white bread
Softened butter, for buttering bread
Pickle relish, preferred brand Wickles Wicked Pickle Relish
8 deli slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
Sour cream and onion or rippled potato chips

This recipe comes to you thanks to Rachael Ray. I’ve never gone wrong with a Rachael Ray recipe and even one as crazy as this is no exception! This is one tasty sandwich! Be sure to head on over to Rachael Ray’s website now for the full instructions. Enjoy!
